What Is Nursing Recognition in Germany?
If you trained as a nurse outside Germany, you cannot simply start working as a licensed nurse (Pflegefachkraft) the moment you arrive. Your qualification must first be assessed and recognized by the relevant German state authority — a process known as Anerkennungsverfahren.
Who Handles the Recognition?
Recognition is managed at the state (Bundesland) level, not federally. Each of Germany’s 16 states has its own authority — typically a Landesprüfungsamt or Bezirksregierung. The Two Possible Outcomes
Full Recognition (Vollanerkennung)
Your nursing training is assessed as fully equivalent to the German standard. You receive your nursing license immediately and can begin work as a fully licensed nurse.
Partial Recognition (Teilanerkennung)
Your training is assessed as partially equivalent. You must complete a compensation measure — either an Anpassungslehrgang (6–12 months supervised clinical work, paid) or a Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge test) — before receiving full licensure.

The Recognition Timeline
Authority assessment: 2–4 months from complete application submission.
Temporary license (Berufserlaubnis): Often issued within 4–6 weeks, allowing supervised work to begin while full recognition is pending.
Adaptation measure (if partial): 6–12 months of supervised clinical work.
Total from application to full license: 8–18 months depending on outcome.
Working While Recognition Is Pending
In most German states, you can apply for a Berufserlaubnis — a temporary license that allows you to work as a nurse under supervision while the full recognition process is pending. This means you can start earning from day one.
